Being a nerd is totally cool

My list for blog items has grown so much I figured I’d write a quick post.

Reading.

One of my many NYR (new year resolutions) was to read more. I’m a huge bookworm, but never get around to really reading what I’d like.

Last year, I read about 10 books. So I set a goal of 20 for this year knowing it would be difficult to meet.

It’s March and I’m up to 4. I just finished “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” because it was the only thing that looked interesting in the Miami Airport. I stayed up until about 1 a.m. finishing it up — couldn’t put it down toward the end.

Overall, it was entertaining. It started off slow, as most people will say, but the journalism stuff was pretty interesting. I thought there was a lot that could have been cut out so I kind of skimmed some parts, esp. when he describes the characters entire day when nothing happens. But in the end, it really picks up and reads quickly. It’s not the best book, but it is a fun, dark read. And yes, the rape scenes are graphic.

So today I went to the DCPL — isn’t it pretty? It’s new! Thanks Former Mayor Fenty! — to get another book. I’ve decided on “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safran Foer.

News.

The DCist announcement about D.C. beers becoming popular was exciting news for the Hubs. He’s a beer connoisseur and he’s dragged me down with him. (But I’m way more pickier about my beers). So having D.C. beers will be pretty cool. At least we might be able to tell my dad to stop bragging about the Sweetwater Brewery in Atlanta.

In health related news, Mother Jones explores the difference between HFCS and sugar. Since I’ve been struggling with a healthier life, stories like this … well, they don’t help, but they are interesting.

This WaPo article about what it is like for restaurants when the Obama’s come to visit was interesting (Tangent: I think I like writing about food issues). I worked down the street from Ray’s Hell Burger when Obama made his stop there in 2009. We debated running up the Hill for a glimpse and one of those to-die-for burgers, but decided against it. Weeks later the little joint was still raking in business because Obama stopped by. But Ray’s is worth the wait. (I highly recommend it if you’re visiting D.C.)

A fun, interesting story about American coins for history lovers. Plus I love the web presentation.

Blog.

Since the hubby is trying pretty hard to do the Vegan thing, I think this blog — Carnivore and Vegetarian — will be helpful.

What are some of my fave places to go in the city?: to blog or not to blog?

Also, I have to blog for the American Observer. It sucks that this just can’t count, but I guess they don’t like my ramblings over there. What should I blog about?

Boy do I know how you feel about being in a blog rut. I’m always stuck in a blogger rut and trying to figure this stuff out.

Weddings.

I just came across a few cool wedding-related things. This wedding is wow. Probably one of my favorite flowers forever.

I love wedding videos. This one is way cool and creative.

Music.

This will forever make me smile. It made my day on Thursday.

Then, the 25th anniversary of Les Miserables was on PBS this morning. By the time the finale came around I was balling. As I was watching, I thought: Marius looks like a Jonas brother. Turns out he was Jonas. Weird.
