All you need is love

Today is a special day for my husband and I.

To remember that, I’m sharing some of our wedding playlist. One of the major pluses to me about making our own playlist for our wedding is that I get to carry it with me anywhere on my iPod.

(We took requests via our website and now when I hear those songs I think about the loved ones who recommended it.)

It was a process making the list. We started out with 600 songs. But in the end our list was quite wonderful. Honestly, the music is one of the most memorable parts of our wedding because we were both so connected to it.

I Just Knew – Better Than Ezra

We actually made about four lists — cocktail hour, reception, special songs, and the rehearsal dinner. The other lists, like the cocktail hour list, gave us the ability to include some of our favorite bands that wouldn’t necessarily make the cut for the larger reception list.

P.S. I Love You – The Beatles (just one of many of the Beatles songs on the lists)

We’re really into music. I’ve already written about how emotive music can be. That’s why we started with 600 songs.

For instance …

Daydream Believer – The Monkees

… was a total tribute to my mom. She is a big Monkees fan.

A few other cocktail list songs: “I’ll have to say I love you in a song” by Jim Croce

“She’s the One” by Bruce Springsteen, “I’m the Man Who Loves You” by Wilco, and “True Love Way” by Kings of Leon.

Friday I’m In Love — The Cure

The Friday night — rehearsal dinner — list was more a variety of songs. This list also featured “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel K. (you know the ukele version), “It’s All Been Done” by Barenaked Ladies, “I’ll Cover You (reprise)” from Rent, and “Waiting for This” by Hanson.

The husband and I got in a big tiff over Garth Brooks’ “Unanswered Prayers” that I think is a great love song.

We had to have some Hootie, so we went with “I Will Wait,” among others. We were in Columbia after all.

Our first dance:

Knot Comes Loose – My Morning Jacket

We knew we weren’t really going to dance-dance. We chose a song that meant something to us. “Our song” is also by My Morning Jacket but it isn’t even remotely danceable, not even white-person danceable. The husband suggested another My Morning Jacket song instead. The lyrics of this song are quite wonderful.

If Not For You – Bob Dylan (this is G. Harrison)

I was really pushing for a Bob song because of my obsession. But the husband was right in the end. My dad and I danced to this instead. Such a lovely song. And the first point at which I couldn’t NOT cry.

We also played “Madeline” by Hanson and “Yellow Submarine” for my niece (she used to sing “lellow submarine” all the time). We entered to “Let My Love Open the Door” by Pete Townshend.

“You’re My Best Friend” – Queen (also “Somebody to Love”)

Some of my favorite songs from the reception night:

Your Love – the Outfield

“September” by Earth Wind and Fire, and “Single Ladies” by Beyonce got people dancing. As did some Gaga songs.

My favorite moment though was “Friends in Low Places” by Garth Brooks. I dare you to try NOT to belt that one out at the top of our lungs.

I Believe in a Thing Called Love – The Darkness

Let’s Hear It for the Boy – Denise Williams

Return to Me – Dean Martin (along with some Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, Bobby Darin, Etta James, and Nat King Cole,)

I Can’t Help Falling in Love – Elvis Presley

I walked down the aisle to “Oh My Love” by John Lennon acoustically played by my brother. Kind of like this:

Maybe you don’t care about my genius playlist making skills. We closed the night with “The Curtain Falls” by Bobby Darin.

And exited to a sea of sparklers and “Catch the Wind” by Donovan.

Music really is forever.

  1. Love that you have a Jim Croce song in there. Our wedding song was “Time In A Bottle.”

Great list of songs!! I’m curious what your song is by MMJ! I initially wanted the song “Golden” by them for our first dance but didn’t think it was danceable enough.
