Hey. I’m Liz.

Liz McCarthy

I’m a graduate of the University of South Carolina’s J-School and a native South Carolinian. I moved back to the South from Washington, D.C. in 2012 after an all too brief stint in that gorgeous town. I love that city, but I’m a country girl at heart.

While in college, I devoted countless hours to the campus newspaper, The Daily Gamecock, as editor-in-chief, and the student magazine, Garnet&Black. I also worked for the Carolina Reporter as a part of a senior seminar. After graduation, I worked as a fellow at the Student Press Law Center in Arlington, Va. I’m a big advocate for free speech and free expression, especially when it comes to students.

I worked at National Association of Realtors on its web team and as an editorial intern at Newsweek magazine’s D.C. bureau.

I graduated with a master’s degree in journalism from American University. At AU I was the graduate fellow for the Bloomberg’s Bureau of National Affairs in Arlington, Va. After graduation I worked as a tax and congressional reporter for Bloomberg BNA. There I not only covered Congress but I had the extremely cool opportunity to cover a presidential press briefing at the White House.

I’ve recently begun working for my alma mater in its communications department. (This is a fully personal blog and does not represent my employer.)

I blog about random stuff. I love to read (#booknerd). I’m really into news and journalism, duh. I also enjoy pop culture and food. I’m trying to change my life (see here, here and here) and be more healthy in mind, body and soul, so expect to see some posts about that kind of stuff. (Traveling, the city and what I’m into).

After this last big move, expect to see more posts on life in South, house hunting, football, etc. I won’t be talking much about Washington anymore. I also blogged a little about my wedding and write about marriage sometimes, too.

I love taking photos and the iPhone attached to my arm does nothing to stop me from trying to post a photo a day as a way to inspire my blogging. That’s dropped off, but I’ll try to be better.

Along the top, you’ll notice I’ve put my portfolio on here so you can check out some of my reporting, multimedia, designs, photography and other writing clips. I’m constantly trying to put more of these skills to work and learn new ways to communicate. I’m a big social media geek, tweeting too much for my own good and Instagramming way too many photos of my cats and plates.

My likes: reading, watching movies and TV shows, debating politics, hiking, camping, napping, shopping, cooking, the news business, social media, Bob Dylan and family.

Dislikes: Clemson, close-mindedness, music-movie-art-wine-literature snobs, one-uppers and  emo-rock.

Pet peeves: Oxford commas, people who chew with their mouths open, people who stand on the left on escalators, people who talk crap about college sports teams but didn’t go to college … the list goes on.

The best show of all time: Friends.

“They don’t know that we know that they know.”
“Ah the messers become the messies.”
